Equity & Education in a dish

At Harwood Island Public School, we envision a nurturing and inclusive learning environment where every student thrives academically, physically, and emotionally. We are committed not only to delivering a high-quality education but also to equipping our students with the essential foundations for a healthy and balanced lifestyle. To support this holistic development, we are proud to introduce a comprehensive nutrition program that offers all students access to wholesome, nutritious meals twice each week, regardless of their socioeconomic status or educational background.

This initiative is founded on three core objectives:

Student eating fruit
Promoting Healthy Eating Habits:
We believe that cultivating a passion for healthy, balanced eating from an early age is crucial to lifelong wellbeing. Through this program, students will be exposed to a variety of nutritious foods that meet their daily dietary requirements, helping them understand the importance of vitamins, minerals, and balanced meals. Complementary educational activities will be integrated into the curriculum to reinforce nutritional knowledge, encouraging students to make informed food choices both inside and outside of school. By providing regular access to wholesome meals, we aim to model positive eating behaviours that can reduce the risk of diet-related health issues and foster a foundation for sustained physical and mental health.
Equity in Diet:
We are dedicated to ensuring that no child experiences hunger or nutritional deprivation due to financial hardship or other barriers. Nourishing every student without exception supports equitable learning opportunities because well-fed students are better able to concentrate, participate, and achieve academically. This program removes stigma by offering meals to all students, promoting inclusivity and social cohesion. By addressing food insecurity directly and compassionately, we strive to build a school community where every child’s basic needs are met, enabling them to fully engage in their learning journey.
Sustainability Education:
Beyond individual health, it is vital for students to understand their role in protecting the environment and making sustainable choices. As part of the nutrition program, we will integrate lessons and activities that highlight the environmental impact of food production, waste, and consumption. Students will learn about concepts such as seasonal eating, local sourcing, reducing food waste, and the benefits of plant-based foods. This approach fosters environmental stewardship and encourages students to become conscientious global citizens who appreciate the connection between sustainability and personal wellbeing.

Through this initiative, Harwood Island Public School is committed to creating a supportive and equitable environment that promotes healthy lifestyles, nurtures academic success, and inspires responsible, sustainable living. Together, we will empower our students with the knowledge, habits, and values they need to flourish now and in the future.
